The house-converted barn does look like a box in this view. That cupola does the trick not making it look so much of a box. And trick as they say, you actually cannot climb your way up there.

Pointing it out, she’s a mother of three little ones. She painted it all white. That’s definitely very brave of her!

So how did the family do it?

Teran writes everything about her home-building journey in her blog, Raised in a Barn. She describes their step-by-step process from acquiring the property to furnishing it! Lucky you, you can read her tips on that blog. But here are her steps one to five in “Building A Barndominium: The Process”.

  • Know your Budget
  • Find the Land
  • Decide on specifications: material, size, number of rooms, etc.
  • Obtain House Plans
  • Find a Builder

It’s actually a lot longer process after these. Reading her blog would be much better for all the specific details when they built the Decatur Barndominium. You can skip doing the ones you have already started in the process. You can also research the things you need to know before you start.

Since their home has been up for three years now, she now has a number of things mentioned in her blog “Building Our House: What we did wrong-ish!”, that they wished they could have done differently. This is something you might want to read on, in case she may have mentioned things you would also like to consider in your homes when you start building your barndos.

But of course, these may have been things that were of lesser priority the time when they were balancing wants against their budget. One of the important things to consider when it comes to the budget would be the Barndominium cost per square foot which is something you really need to look into. But Teran’s point, always stick to your budget when starting.

You may just expand or add some of the other necessities over time. Also, read on the Building our House: What we did right” part one and Building our House: What we did right” part two. These important points they have considered in building the Decatur Barndominium home might also be helpful in yours.

So finally, after seeing all her photos on Instagram and reading her tips from her blog, surely you now want to get your hands on the Decatur Barndominium house plan. In her blog, she wrote all the intricate details of her home, plus more tips, including info on finding the right builder!

Bedroom #2 also had to be converted to a large storage closet to stay on budget.

Teran and her family has certainly defined what they say “thinking outside of the box” for their beautiful home.

But, don’t get too pressured about building sooner. Like they say, one step at a time. If you have to, check out more barndo designs. You can head on to YouTube, Pinterest, or even interact with barndo owners and those planning to get one on different Facebook barndominium communities.
