Interview with DFW Barndominium Owner Leigh Ann Jindra Ward

BarndominiumLife (BL): How did your barndominium come about?

Leigh Ann (LA): We purchased 6 acres with an existing 40×60 metal barn that had a 1500 sq ft finished out living space in 2011. In 2013 we completely re did the existing building, enlarged the master bedroom, added a master bath and a 1500sq ft mother in law apartment…making the entire house 4500 sq ft with a big porch, outside living space and garage. The main house features exposed barn beam rafters, re purposed cabinets through out and re purposed materials.

BL: Did you use an architect to draw up your plans or do it on your own?

LA: We are builders. My husband has been in the building industry for 40 years. He started in shop class in high school, opened a small cabinet shop right out of high school and was an interior trim contractor when we married in the early 80’s, which is where his passion for specialized interior finishes started. He is can customize any existing floor plan or start from scratch. We knew when we walked in the barn exactly what we wanted to do with it. The only thing we added was the Mother in Law apartment that we added for his aging parents.

BL: How great that you were able to transform that space as you did. You mentioned some issues with the county — what objections would they have? Were they issues we should be watching for as we plan our barndominiums?

LA: We had no issues with the county. It’s much different building in the county vs with in city limits. I guess the only restrictions one may have could be deed restrictions that could dictate the type of structure/materials/square footage allowed in the area you are looking to build.
